Cycle tour Sneekermeer

On this route, you cycle along three large lakes, part of the Frisian Lakes:Sneekermeer (Snitser Mar), Tjeukemeer (Tsjûkemar) and De Langweerder Wielen (Langwarder Wheels). The Tsûkemar is Friesland's largest inland lake. The Frisian lakes are the beating heart of water sports in Friesland. But they have not always been there. There are various stories about their genesis. Usually, humans are pointed to as the cause. They extracted peat and salt, which caused the soil to sink, creating space for water. Then, in the late Middle Ages, Friesland was plagued by major storm surges. Lakes got bigger and bigger and some villages even had to be moved because of this or were swallowed up by the water!
